Australia's submarines: The world reacts

Australia’s decision to cancel its French submarine contract in favour of partnering with the US and the UK on nuclear-powered boats has provoked local and international controversy. The decision has implications for US, Chinese, European and Southeast Asian diplomacy and defence policies. Join Richard McGregor, the Lowy Institute’s senior fellow for East Asia, in discussion with three experts: Bilahari Kausikan, the former head of the Singapore Foreign Ministry, Yun Sun, of the Stimson Centre in Washington DC, and Nadège Rolland, of the National Bureau of Asia Research in the United States.

Bilahari Kausikan is an academic and retired diplomat who served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United Nations and as Secretary of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is now Chairman of the Middle East Institute at the National University of Singapore.

Yun Sun is a Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center in Washington. Her expertise is in Chinese foreign policy, U.S.-China relations and China’s relations with neighbouring countries.

Nadège Rolland is a Senior Fellow for Political and Security Affairs at National Bureau of Asia Research, and a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute. Her research focuses mainly on China’s domestic, foreign and defense policy and grand strategy.
